Dear Coral Gables Residents,

Greetings from your neighbors to the north in Little Gables, a small unincorporated enclave surrounded on three sides by Coral Gables.

In keeping with Coral Gables founder George Merrick's original plan, we would like to join you in the City Beautiful. As your little brother, we have voted twice in the past ten years that we would like to join you. Now we are asking for your agreement to do so.

The August 20 election includes a Coral Gables Non-Binding Straw Ballot question regarding the potential annexation of Little Gables. We are asking you to vote YES on the annexation of Little Gables. (Please vote Yes by choosing 404.)

Certainly, the advantages to our enclave in joining the City Beautiful are manifest–and we would be grateful, to be sure–yet we do not ask for your vote merely as a matter of brotherly love. Please consider the advantages that will accrue to Coral Gables and its residents below..

Benefits of Little Gables Annexation

to Coral Gables and its Residents:

Safety: Securing the 8th street border by eliminating an enclave allows easier operation by the Coral Gables Police and its “geo-fence” system of cameras that track license plates as vehicles enter Coral Gables. “My position as police chief is that if we square off the city, it’s much easier to patrol one border than three borders,” according to Gables Police Chief Hudak.

Beautification: As part of George Merrick's original plan, this would beautify the Le Jeune corridor, one of the main entrances to the city.

Long term financial stability: While the short-term costs are indeed present, by the fifth year they are negligible and in the longer term Little Gables will be a net contributor to the City Beautiful. As recognized by Coral Gables' mayor:“It’s an investment in the future of the city,”

The Alternative is worse: Miami-Dade County has said that it needs all enclaves to be absorbed into the adjoining municipalities. Without Coral Gables annexation, Little Gables could be forced to join City of Miami, thus producing a Miami peninsula in the heart of Coral Gables, almost to Alhambra Circle, lowering safety, increasing crime, uncontrolled development and diminishing property values.
